Arthroscopic Surgery

Arthroscopy

Orthopedic surgeons use arthroscopy to look inside joints without making large cuts. This minimally invasive technique involves small incisions and helps diagnose and treat a wide range of joint-related issues. Conditions like arthritis, rotator cuff tears, carpal tunnel syndrome, ACL injuries, PCL injuries, and Meniscus injuries can be effectively addressed using arthroscopy. Different joints and ligaments may require different arthroscopic approaches based on the specific condition.

Overview

Who Performs Arthroscopy?

Orthopedic surgeons are the specialists who perform arthroscopic procedures. They are highly trained in treating disorders of the musculoskeletal system, including bones, joints, ligaments, tendons, and muscles.

Types of Arthroscopy

Different parts of the body may need specialized arthroscopy. Common types include:

  • Shoulder Arthroscopy
  • Knee Arthroscopy
  • Hip Arthroscopy
  • Elbow Arthroscopy
  • Foot and Ankle Arthroscopy
  • Hand and Wrist Arthroscopy

Each type is designed for the specific joint structure and type of injury or condition being treated.

Why is Arthroscopy Performed?

Surgeons use arthroscopy to diagnose and treat:

  • Joint inflammation or pain
  • Torn cartilage or ligaments
  • Loose bone or tissue fragments
  • Conditions like arthritis, ACL tears, PCL Tears, MCL Tears, Meniscus tears, and carpal tunnel syndrome

The real-time images from the arthroscope help guide precise treatment, often without needing major surgery.

How is Arthroscopy Performed?

  1. Small incisions are made near the affected joint.
  2. An arthroscope is inserted to view the inside of the joint.
  3. If needed, surgical tools are introduced to treat the problem.
  4. Once done, the tools and scope are removed.
  5. The incisions are stitched and bandaged.

This approach leads to faster recovery, minimal scarring, and reduced complications compared to traditional open surgery.

Who May Need Arthroscopy?

Your doctor may advise an arthroscopic procedure if you’ve experienced damage to important joint structures like the meniscus, cartilage, tendons, or ligaments.
Arthroscopy is typically considered when non-surgical methods fail to relieve joint pain or mobility issues.

These conservative treatments may include:

  • Use of braces or supportive splints
  • Medications or anti-inflammatory injections
  • Physical therapy or guided rehabilitation
  • Rest and reduced physical activity

If these approaches don’t provide long-term relief, arthroscopy may offer a more effective solution

Procedure Details

What Should You Do Before Arthroscopy?

Your healthcare provider will share specific pre-operative instructions, which are important to follow. In general, you should:

  • Inform your doctor about any known allergies
  • Share a list of all medications and supplements you’re currently taking
  • Tell your provider if you’re using blood thinners or NSAIDs (like ibuprofen or aspirin)
  • Avoid eating or drinking anything after midnight before your scheduled surgery

These steps help reduce risk and ensure your procedure goes smoothly

What Happens During the Procedure?

Arthroscopy is most often performed as a day-care (outpatient) surgery, so you can go home the same day. Since anesthesia is typically used, you’ll need someone to accompany you, drive you home, and stay with you during recovery for the first 24 hours.

The steps involved may vary based on your joint condition, but here’s how a typical arthroscopy is performed:

  1. The orthopedic surgeon makes 2–3 tiny incisions (each about the size of a buttonhole) near the affected joint
  2. A small device called an arthroscope, which contains a light and camera, is inserted to visualize the joint on a screen
  3. Additional small instruments are inserted to carry out treatment, if needed such as removing damaged tissue or repairing ligaments
  4. Once the procedure is complete, all tools are removed, and the incisions are closed with stitches or surgical tape and covered with a bandage
  5. After treatment, all instruments are carefully removed.
  6. The small incisions are closed using stitches and covered with a sterile bandage.

The entire surgery usually takes about one hour, though complex cases may take slightly longer.

What to Expect After Arthroscopy

Most patients are able to return home just a few hours after the procedure. Your surgeon will provide personalized instructions for recovery. Common post-operative guidelines include:

  • Avoid placing weight on the treated joint temporarily. If your hip or leg was treated, you may need crutches or another support aid.
  • Apply ice to the area and keep it elevated to reduce swelling.
  • Keep the surgical site clean and covered with a sterile dressing.
  • Use prescribed pain relievers or anti-inflammatory medications (NSAIDs) to manage discomfort.
  • Shower only until the incision heals avoid soaking in baths or swimming.
  • You may be asked to wear a brace or sling depending on the joint treated.

Follow-up visits will help your provider monitor healing and decide when you can resume normal activities.

Benefits of Arthroscopy

Arthroscopy is known for its minimally invasive approach and quicker recovery time. Compared to traditional open surgery, arthroscopy offers several advantages:

  • Shorter recovery period
  • Reduced post-operative pain
  • Smaller incisions and minimal scarring
  • Lower risk of blood loss during surgery

These benefits make it a preferred choice for diagnosing and treating joint conditions with less disruption to your daily life.

Risks and Possible Complications

Although arthroscopy is considered a safe procedure, like all surgeries, it carries some potential risks. These may include:

  • Allergic reaction to anesthesia or medications
  • Formation of blood clots, including deep vein thrombosis (DVT)
  • Injury to nearby nerves, blood vessels, or tissues
  • Excessive bleeding or post-surgical swelling
  • Infection at the incision site

Your surgeon will take necessary precautions to minimize risks and will guide you through safe recovery practices.

Recovery & Outlook

What Happens After the Procedure?

Once the arthroscopy is complete, your doctor will discuss the initial findings and any treatments performed during the procedure. This conversation usually happens on the same day, before you’re discharged.

What is the Recovery Process Like?

Although arthroscopy allows for a quicker recovery compared to traditional open surgery, complete healing can still take several weeks or even months, depending on the joint treated and the procedure performed.

You may be able to return to light work or daily activities within a few days. Your healthcare provider might also recommend physical therapy (PT) to support the recovery process. PT helps improve joint function, strengthen nearby muscles, and reduce the risk of reinjury.

Questions to Ask Your Doctor

  • What type of arthroscopy-related condition do I have?
  • Will I need surgery or can it be managed non-surgically?
  • How long will recovery take in my case?
  • When can I return to normal daily activities or sports?
