Cast Conservative Treatment

Conservative Treatment for Bone Fractures

The way a bone fracture is treated depends on its type, the cause of injury, and the extent of damage. In many cases, non-surgical or conservative treatment is effective especially when the bone hasn’t shifted out of place.

Immobilization

If the fracture is mild and the bone fragments are still aligned (non-displaced), the doctor may recommend immobilization using a splint or cast.

  • Splints offer temporary support and are typically worn for 3 to 5 weeks.
  • Casts provide more rigid protection and may be required for 6 to 8 weeks or longer.
  • Follow-up X-rays are usually scheduled to ensure that the bone is healing in the correct position.

This method supports natural healing by keeping the fractured bone stable and protected

Closed Reduction

In cases where the bones have moved out of alignment but surgery isn’t necessary, your doctor may perform a closed reduction to realign the bone without making any incisions.

During this non-surgical procedure:

  • The doctor will carefully manipulate the bone from the outside to restore proper positioning.
  • To ensure comfort during the process, you may be given:
    • Local anesthesia to numb the area
    • Sedatives to help relax your body
    • General anesthesia to keep you asleep during the procedure

Once the bone is set correctly, a cast or splint will be applied to support healing and prevent further movement.

When Should I Call the Doctor?

You should visit the emergency room or contact your healthcare provider immediately if you experience:

  • Intense pain that worsens or doesn’t improve
  • Visible signs of infection (such as redness, warmth, or pus)
  • Fever or unusual swelling

Bleeding or a sudden change in your symptoms

Questions to Ask Your Doctor

  • What type of fracture do I have?
  • Will I need surgery or can it be managed non-surgically?
  • How long will recovery take in my case?
  • When can I return to normal daily activities or sports?
